ABGi Ireland’s Science and Engineering team share key takeaways from the Medical Technology Ireland Conference at Galway Racecourse, highlighting innovation across the sector and the vital role of R&D Tax Credits and European grants in supporting MedTech growth.

The Science and Engineering team at ABGi Ireland recently had the pleasure of attending the Medical Technology Ireland Conference in Galway Racecourse. Attending the variety of stalls, checking in with current clients, forums and panel discussions was a/an engaging/reaffirming/eye-opening and rewarding insight into the various different aspects of the medical technology development cycle present in the Irish Market, both from indigenous companies at the different stages of development and from multi-nationals with sites based in Ireland and abroad. The sheer quality and quantity of innovation from those involved with research and development was inspiring.

Irish MedTech innovation on display

Conference panel discussions varied in topic with discussions relating to the future of Irish Medical Technology, Ireland and Europe’s Role in Innovation, Clinical Research in Innovation, Women in MedTech and Investing in the Future of Medtech Innovation. These discussions were enlightening, challenging and interactive, with each one invoking reflection on the role of R&D tax credits and securing grant funding can play in the innovation cycle.

R&D at the heart of progress

Innovation was at the forefront of the conference with R&D visible throughout. Almost every stall illustrated companies making exceptional leaps in technology, from first principles basic research, through to applied research and experimental development. Witnessing this first hand has made the team even more excited to help Irish-based companies to achieve R&D goals by supporting them through the R&D Tax Credit process from project and cost identification through to final technical reporting and inquiry support.

Funding challenges in uncertain times

A running theme present throughout the conference was the tumultuous nature of funding and investment in research and development, in the fluctuating world economy that we see around us today. With this in mind, at ABGi Ireland, we have seen the benefits to our clients of utilising the R&D tax credit system as a way of de-risking and promoting research and development projects. With 30 % of eligible R&D costs available to be recouped in Tax Credits (Against Tax Liabilities or in a cash refund), R&D projects can yield a greater return at reduced risk to the company. The team at ABGi Ireland are experienced, ready and able to assist in claiming these credits today, with our clients ranging from start-ups and pre-trading entities, through to multi-national medical device design companies and bespoke design houses with large R&D spends.

Access to European grant opportunities

Coupled with the R&D Tax credit, the ABGi team can offer technical support, advice, financial projection and project planning in the application for and acquisition of EIC Accelerator and Horizon Europe Grant funding through our dedicated grants team. The grants team, with the support of our Dublin office, can help link you to potential partners across Europe to build a strong cohort of applicants to support the R&D proposed, before planning, supporting and executing applications, full proposals and interview prep to help secure funding for the company and its R&D team.
